PURPOSE. The purpose of this award is to support the career development of new investigators in the areas of trauma, shock and sepsis. Candidates must have the potential to develop into outstanding independent investigators. The proposed research must focus on developing new knowledge related to the biology of trauma, shock and/or sepsis. Research may vary from basic cellular responses to clinical outcomes that might include translational research and clinical application. Proposed research must have intrinsic importance, but may also contain a component for permitting the applicant to learn the methodology, theory, and conceptualizations necessary for developing into an outstanding independent researcher. AWARD. The award will be $60,000 over two years. Half will be granted the first year, 40% will be awarded the second year contingent upon a satisfactory progress report to the Awards Committee, and 10% will be granted upon completion with presentation of results orally at the US Shock Society meeting. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: ● Candidates for the fellowship must be members of the US Shock Society or International Shock Society who will be performing the proposed research at an institution within the United States. ●The candidate must have a doctoral degree or its equivalent, such as but not limited to MD, PhD, DDS, DMD, DO, DC, OD, DVM, or Pharm D. ● The purpose of this fellowship is to support the development of outstanding basic science and/or clinician research scientists. Therefore, preference will be given to candidates in the early stage of their career. Ineligible individuals include current and former principal investigators in NIH research project (R01), FIRST AWARDS (R29), and career development awards (K01, K07, K23), sub-projects of program project (P01) or center grants (P50) or the equivalent. Former principal investigators of NIH Small Grants (R03) or Exploratory/Developmental Grants (R21) remain eligible. Current or former recipients of Clinical Associate ● The candidate must have demonstrated research interest and/or experience in the area of the pathophysiology of trauma, shock and/or sepsis. Approaches may vary from basic cellular responses to outcomes research, and may include translational science as well as clinical applications. Preference will be given for new and innovative research not generally supported by industry. ● The candidate must be willing to spend a minimum of 20% full-time professional effort conducting research and research career development. Time commitment should be commensurate with salary status. ● Identification of a research mentor who is an established investigator is desirable. ● The applicant’s department and institution must demonstrate a commitment to the candidate as a productive, independent investigator. The application should clearly indicate that the candidate has sufficient resources available to perform the research and has or will receive appropriate training in the responsible conduct of research. These resources may be provided by the mentor, the institution, or both. ALLOWABLE COSTS. Allowable costs include equipment and supplies. Salary support is allowed for technical assistance but not for the applicant's or the mentor's salary. Costs for secretarial services and administrative services (indirect costs) are not allowed. All costs must be directly related to the proposed research. The budget must include funds for travel to the annual meeting of the Shock Society where research findings will be presented in a format to be determined by the Chair of the Shock Society Program Committee. Travel associated with research training is also permitted. INCLUSION OF WOMEN, MINORITIES, AND CHILDREN IN RESEARCH INVOLVING HUMAN SUBJECTS. Outline pertinent educational experience and professional experience B. Research Plan (2 pages). Describe the research plan and the use of a basic or clinical science approach towards furthering knowledge in the areas of trauma, shock and/or sepsis. Include the following. 1. Specific Aim(s) C. Environment (1/4 page). Briefly describe the research environment. Describe the applicant's research space, available equipment, and secretarial support. D. Budget (1/4 page). Describe how the budget will be allocated for salary, supplies, equipment, and travel. E. Letters of recommendation (list here and include with the application). Two letters of recommendation addressing the candidate's potential for a research career must be included as part of the application. If appropriate, one letter must be from the designated mentor, along with the mentor's biosketch, submitted in the 3-page NIH format that includes currently funded research. The mentor's letter should include information to describe the candidate's research plan and nature of the supervision that will occur during the proposed award period. F. Training in the responsible conduct of research. Candidates must describe plans to receive instruction in the responsible conduct of research. These plans must detail the proposed subject matter, format, frequency, and duration of instruction. No award will be made if an application lacks this component. G. Environment and institutional commitment. The sponsoring institution must provide a statement to document the level of commitment to the candidate's development into a productive, independent investigator. This must include an indication of support for candidate's proposed level of effort related to this award, commitment to release time, as well as the availability of support during the award period. H. Women, minorities, and children in research involving human subjects. Describe use of human subjects, which must be compatible with NIH guidelines.
